What Is Indrayani Rice? A Buyer's Guide to Maharashtra's Everyday Rice

Indrayani rice from Maharashtra

Ask for "sona masuri" or "basmati" in a Maharashtrian household and you might get a puzzled look, because a lot of everyday cooking here doesn't use either — it uses Indrayani. It's the rice that ends up in varan-bhaat, khichdi, and curd rice more often than in a fancy biryani, and it behaves differently on the plate because it's a genuinely different variety, not just a regional nickname for basmati. Here's what it actually is, and which pack on UmedMart to pick.

What Indrayani rice actually is

Indrayani takes its name from the Indrayani river, which runs through the Maval region near Pune. The variety traces its lineage to Ambemohar — the fragrant, short-grain rice long grown in the Western Ghats foothills of Pune district — and was developed with Ambemohar parentage at the Rice Research Centre near Lonavala, released around 1987 to give farmers a more dependable-yielding option than the disease-prone, low-yield Ambemohar while keeping some of its aromatic character. Today it's grown across the Pune–Satara–Kolhapur belt of Maharashtra.

Cooked, Indrayani is a medium grain with a soft, slightly sticky texture — grains cling together rather than staying separate the way basmati does, and the aroma is milder than basmati or Ambemohar rather than the dominant note. That stickiness isn't a flaw; it's exactly why the rice works so well for the dishes it's traditionally used for.

What it's good for (and what it isn't)

Because the grains hold together and soften easily, Indrayani is the rice of choice for varan-bhaat (dal and rice), masale bhaat, khichdi, and curd rice — dishes where you want the rice to absorb flavour and sit comfortably rather than stay fluffy and separate. If what you're after is long, distinct, separate grains for a biryani or pulao, basmati is generally the better tool for that job; Indrayani isn't built for that texture, and there's no need to force it.

The two Indrayani options on UmedMart

UmedMart currently carries Indrayani rice from two different Maharashtra SHGs:

  • Samarth Gruhudyog, made by Savitri SHG in Karad, Satara district — the listing describes it as free from artificial chemicals, and it's the only Indrayani option here sold across four pack sizes: 100 g (₹118), 200 g (₹128), 500 g (₹156), and 1 kg (₹198).
  • Parvati SHG, from Nandurbar — sold as a single 1 kg pack (₹190). The listing describes this one as organic and chemical-free; UmedMart hasn't independently verified an organic certification, so treat that as the seller's description rather than a certified claim.

Both are handmade by women-run SHGs rather than processed at an industrial rice mill, which is also why you may notice small batch-to-batch differences in grain colour or polish — normal for hand-processed rice, not a quality issue.

Storing it well

Like any raw rice, Indrayani keeps best in an airtight container, in a cool, dry spot away from direct sunlight and moisture. If you buy the smaller 100–200 g packs to try it out before committing to a kilo, that also happens to be a sensible way to keep a first batch fresh while you decide whether it suits your cooking.

Quick FAQs

Is Indrayani rice the same as basmati? No. It's a separate medium-grain variety bred from Ambemohar, with a softer, stickier cooked texture and a milder aroma than basmati.

Can I use it for biryani? You can, but its sticky, clinging texture won't give you the long, separate grains biryani usually wants — it's better suited to varan-bhaat, khichdi, and curd rice.

Which pack size should I start with? If you haven't cooked with Indrayani before, Samarth Gruhudyog's 100 g or 200 g pack is a low-commitment way to try it; once you know you like it, the 500 g and 1 kg packs (from either SHG) work out cheaper per gram.
