Bhagar pith is ground bhagar — the small fasting grain Maharashtrian kitchens use through Navratri and other upvas days. The same flour is also sold as bhagar flour or varai flour. This 500 g pack comes from a women's self-help group in Nashik district.
What it's for: upvas bhakri, thalipeeth and a quick sheera. It is not a substitute for whole bhagar grain, which is what goes into khichdi — if your household eats both, buy both.
Storing: ground grain loses freshness faster than whole, so keep it in an airtight jar in a cool, dry place and use it within a couple of months.
There is also a 1 kg pack, cheaper per kilo for a full house. For what else to keep in for the fast, see our upvas shopping guide.
