What to use it for

The everyday oil of many Maharashtrian kitchens. It works for phodni in amti and bhaji, for poha and upma, and for deep-frying faral like chakli and karanji. Wood-pressed groundnut oil has a clear nutty smell, so you will notice it in the food. Made from groundnuts — not suitable for anyone with a peanut allergy.

What to expect from a wood-pressed oil

Oil pressed slowly in a wooden ghana is usually filtered rather than refined, so it keeps more of the seed's own smell and colour than a supermarket refined oil. A thin layer of sediment may settle at the bottom of the bottle — that is normal. Pour gently if you want it clear.

Weight, not volume

This oil is sold by weight. Oil is lighter than water, so 910 g is roughly one litre — useful to know when you compare it with oils sold in ml.

Keep the lid closed and store the bottle away from the stove and direct sunlight.
