ORGANIC ORIGINS Pure Coconut Oil, wooden Pressed Oild, Sakhi SHG, Natural, Chemical Free, 1000 gm

Wood-pressed (lakdi ghana) coconut (khobrel) oil sold under the ORGANIC ORIGINS label and made by Sakhi Self Help Group in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. Pack size: 1000 g.

What to use it for

The cooking oil of the Konkan coast — fish and prawn curries, coconut-based vegetables, and tempering for chutneys. It has a clear coconut aroma, so it suits dishes where that fits.

What to expect from a wood-pressed oil

Oil pressed slowly in a wooden ghana is usually filtered rather than refined, so it keeps more of the seed's own smell and colour than a supermarket refined oil. A thin layer of sediment may settle at the bottom of the bottle — that is normal. Pour gently if you want it clear.

Weight, not volume

This oil is sold by weight. Oil is lighter than water, so 1000 g is about 1.08–1.1 litres — useful to know when you compare it with oils sold in ml.

Storage

Keep the lid closed and store the bottle away from the stove and direct sunlight. Coconut oil turns solid below about 24°C, so it may set in winter or in an air-conditioned room. Stand the closed bottle in warm water for a few minutes and it will melt again — this does not mean anything is wrong with it.
